The Wealth of Stage Images

11. 9. 2019–4. 10. 2019

Danijel Demšar was born in 1954 in Bresternica near Maribor. After finishing the Secondary School for Design and Photography in Ljubljana, he enrolled at the Faculty of Education in Maribor, but already in the following year (1974) he transferred to the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana. He graduated in 1979 under the mentorship of Štefan Planinc. Soon after graduation, he began his career as an art teacher and focusing intensively on book illustration. In 1986 he became a self-employed professional in culture and since then he has been devoted to his wide palette of creativity. He created his first visual design for a puppet play in 1991 for the play Heavenly Theatre (by Boris A. Novak) for the Pioneer Puppet Theatre in Split. From there to his play play, Golden Boat in 2009 (based on a story by Kajetan Kovič and directed by Vladimir Jurca for the Mini Theatre in Ljubljana), he designed fifteen puppet plays, seven of which for the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre. Most of his acknowledgements derive from his work as an illustrator. He was awarded three Hinko Smrekar awards (1993 for the illustration of Arabian Folk Fables, 1997 for The Treasure of al-Shamardal, 2010 for his illustration of the book Roža v srcu). He also received two Levstik awards – following the first one in 1985 was the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013.

The exhibition is open during events at the LGM.
